Remember that anyone in your group can edit this page and make it more "accurate" or "incorrect". Only one person can edit this page at a time so don't all go to the lab and try to write this page at once. However, the final answer to your question should be the result of every group member's input. You can use the discussion tab to help come to a consensus on what should be your final result below. Do not write the answer as a group and then post the answer here. All edits, revisions and changes of opinion should occur on this page.

QUESTION:

Do you own Facebook? Or does Facebook own you?

ANSWER:

Yes, facebook owns us. They own us because we clicked yes when those terms popped up in our mini feed. I bet you people did not even read what they said. Now facebook owns everything we upload. Is that fair? No, it is an invasion of privacy, but I guess since we agreed to the terms it is technically fair. Not only does Facebook own the material we post, things we say, and ideas we have through it, but the site dominates our social lives. Social networking has become a main form of communication for our generation, evident in the amount of time any high schooler will admit to spending on sites like Facebook. Our dependence on Facebook has become almost second nature. After any social gathering, if someone was taking pictures, loading these pictures on Facebook has evolved from an opportunity to a requirement. The same goes for many organized events or groups. So many people are Facebook users that creating a group has become a primary way of encouraging attendance and raising awareness awareness.

Even the advertisements on its sidebars own us because the site as a whole has become a part, an addictive and influencial one at that, of our everyday lives. New York Magazine even says, "We, the users, are what Facebook is selling." Facebook users are a clear, specifc, and easy target market for so many products, how can the site not take advantage of that? Facebook owns us through their policies, our time, and the opportunity for advertisers.

Facebook and its users have a symbiotic relationship. Both gain from the other. Actually, this is not true yet, since Facebook loses money. But it could/should/will be eventually.
